Not-too-Easy Riders

You think you had it rough?

Take a look at this clip and think again

http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/vietnam804/video/video_index.html

It’s a story about a SF engineer, who got injured in an Easy Rider’s accident, decides to invent and improve

first his own wheel chairs, then in partnership with others, to promote the

Rough riders for developing countries, and in this clip, Vietnam.

This reminds me of another entrepreneur who after the lay off of Bear Stearns, went into business with some friends in Queen, NY to produce sandals made out of abandoned rubber tires in Vietnam and Cambodia.

These are inspiring stories of social entrepreneurship. And to see lyrics like “disabled but not paralyzed” gives new interpretation to the term: human spirit (after all, they held ping-pong tournament, and celebrated their victory in group karaoke).

Stories that would have made Eunice Kennedy proud.

Speaking of the Kennedy’s. I want to extend my deepest condolences to the Irish clan, who has given the world so much, and in exchange, most of the time, all they asked for was privacy so they can sail and enjoy family reunion.

Sometimes I am mad at the media for not going out of their way to give us stories of inspiration and hope.

(they gave us Paris and Whitney instead).

Or, it’s dark, doom and despairing topics which rule the day. I guess as if they made us feel depressed, so that we would consume more to drown out our sorrow (soup, soap and cereal).

Come on, people live on even without legs. And with a little help from the Rough Riders, and the music from Easy Riders

(with hair and the cool shades that only Peter Fonda can afford) we are on: “in the highway, looking for an adventure”.
