Lucky 7

Mark this date. October 22nd.

It’s the planned release date for Win 7 O/S.

The author said, “in the high-tech world, an 8-year-old operating system is like a 20-year-old car”.

I hope they have “cash for (Vista) clunker” program to stimulate my purchase.

Tech hasn’t ruled in a while.

I hope this month marks its recovery (Intel, Google) hence the broader economy.

Some IT geeks will have work, albeit small upgrade jobs, and maybe “would you like a new Compaq to go with that?”

I am working through “Free”, Chris Anderson’s follow-up to Long Tail.

A free Window 7 with a purchase of a second computer or laptop would definitely stimulate buying decision.

BTW, I forgot to congratulate Mr Obama on his latest award (Nobel Peace Prize).

Turn around story of the week:  from defeat (Olympic) to victory (Nobel).

Now the hard part: to earn the Nobel prize title (and not be threatened w/ a recall as in Mr Kissinger’s case).

At least, the EU seems to enjoy its renewed relationship with America (France, Britain stood behind US to face Iran).

Maybe we will get to welcome many of the former Eastern Europeans to New York for a shopping trip.

At least one Romanian writer will soon be able to afford it. She won the Nobel Prize for literature writing about her years under totalitarianism.

Back to Window 7. I remember every time a new version was released, shoppers would line up outside the stores like they would at Walmart on Black Friday (watch out doorman).

At least, the love for a new set of wheels last summer now gives way to the urge for a new Operating System.

New Century needs new OS. Here comes the rhetorical question: while changing out the O/S, are we still operating under old assumptions about diplomacy,

economic model and business strategies? There ain’t going to be any OS that greets nations in a proper way, balances the trade deficit and says “thanks, come back again, we love and need your referrals”. (Letterman joked that the navigation lady refuse to speak to him the day of his public confession).

To lure in tourists (which essentially was behind the Chicago bid for the Olympic), host citizens need a welcoming attitude, not “drive by”.  Notice I did not say “kiss them on both cheeks”. That would be asking too much of Americans, citizens of Most Admired Country, but acting like Most Admired County. During the 80’s, Vegas rode its boom by speaking Japanese to court the yen. There is a lesson in luck there: one type is happenstance, the other, self-willed.

Window 7 has already been blessed with that favorite betting numero. All MS has to do is to will its luck this time.
